They gender-swapped a character, and it’s a disaster.

Uh… I agree that the director’s move was stupid, but I don’t think it’s gonna be a game changer. Leit / Dr. Kynes is a rather minor character – although important for the background, doesn’t get a lot of screen time in the book or the movie. Since I first saw the David Lynch version as a kid (so I can overlook its flaws with nostalgia), that got me to read all the books (even the prequels and two of the pre-prequels), and I even enjoyed the miniseries (which I agree was more accurate, but worse acted). If nothing else, it will encourage more people to read the series… regardless of major goofs in translation.
